DEEPWATER INTERVENTION FORUM
August 19-21 @ Moody Gardens Hotel & Convention Center –
Galveston, Texas
While Light Well Intervention (LWI) experiences have in
recent past been North Sea focused, the Deepwater Invervention Forum, sponsored
by FMC Technologies and Shell, featured 17 exhibitors in the Offshore Equipment
and Services Markets, Operators, as well as government representatives of the
MMS, and provided particular emphasis on the new landscape for interventions in
the Gulf of Mexico. Whereas
Interventions in the North Sea have been conducted in, what by Gulf of Mexico
standards may be considered shallow depths, the complexities of greater water
depths in the Gulf invite numerous additional challenges. Case studies representing the latest
intervention technologies were presented by Oceaneering / Superior Energy,
Helix, Lewis, FMC Technologies, Aker Oilfield Services, and other related to
new capabilities for well access, new and projected vessel availability, and
new services. In the high oil price
environment, rig rates and utilization have remained high, driving additional
demand for multi-purpose and special-purpose vessels with comparatively lower
day rates to carry out interventions on wells for increased oil
production. The higher price of oil is
escalating interest in capturing the value gap between current prodcution rates
and enhanced production rates that can be made available through intervention
techniques.

OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE
May 5-8, 2008 @ Reliant Center – Houston, Texas
Representatives from 100+ countries gathered at the OTC
this year, with attendance reaching a 26-year high at 75,092. The Offshore
Technology Conference hosted in Houston, Harris County, Texas, is the World’s
largest Offshore event, with more than one-half million square feet of
exhibition space, the size of 13 football fields, highlighted innovations and
new technological approaches to meet the growing global energy demand. As global energy demand continues to
increase, along with higher commodity prices, oil and gas exploration,
drilling, and production is driven to more complex and extreme offshore
environments. Accordingly, over 300 industry technical presentations were
provided delving into the future of petroleum, technologies required to extend
drilling and production capabilities, as well as additional challenges that the
industry faces as a whole. Members of
the firm attacked the OTC in full force throughout the 4 day event, had
discussions with private company Presidents and Operators, with Senior
Executives of numerous large publicly traded Strategic Acquirers, as well as
Private Equity Groups focused on the Offshore and Oilfield Equipment/Services
Markets.
From a broad perspective, there continue to be rumblings
within the marketplace of continued gains in momentum within the Oilfield and
Offshore M&A marketplace. Operators of Oilfield Service Companies and
OEM Oilfield Equipment Manufacturers have, in general, benefited and grown
tremendously as a result of the current price of oil. Private Equity
Groups that historically have been quite aggressive in acquisitions are now
competing with Strategic Acquirers that have similarly generated cash that must
be redeployed as investment capital. Private Company Owners are examining
potential cycles, with remembrance and perhaps the scars of previous oil patch
downturns, and asking questions about future possible changes in capital gains,
whether there is potential for another downturn, and whether the current
upswing could indicate optimal timing for an exit strategy or recapitalization
of their businesses for further growth. Additionally, as other areas of
the U.S. economy have suffered as a result of credit market tightening, many
Financial as well as Strategic Buyers are demonstrating increasing interest in
Energy-related Middle Market Companies particularly in the Gulf-South that
would allow them to diversify their portfolios, financially insulate themselves
to an extent, and to benefit from the growth in Energy Markets. Many of
these factors have created a very active environment for Energy-related
M&A. As a result of the work conducted by the firm at the 2008
Offshore Technology Conference, multiple opportunities to assist Private
Company Owners in preparing, packaging, presenting their Companies to the
Marketplace were identified, and the firm concurrently solidified capabilities
to deliver high quality Companies to Senior Strategic and Equity Investors.

BARNETT SHALE EXPO
The Barnett Shale State of Energy Luncheon featured Donald
L. Evans, the 34th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, and
a member of President Bush’s economic team.
Secretary Evans provided an overview of the linkages between oil and gas
exploration and production activities and global energy demand, as well as the
role the local community plays in economic development. Following Secretary Evans, Dr. M. Ray
Perryman, Founder and President of The Perryman Group, provided an update to
annual economic and financial analysis of the Barnett Shale play. The tradeshow featured a community education
program on current approaches to urban drilling, which is carried out in the
area due to the high-production areas of the shale that are located in Tarrant
County. According to Perryman, “Already one of the largest natural gas fields in North
America, the scope of the Barnett Shale
is expanding, with exploration and development pushing boundaries and
reserve estimates outward and
upward.” Despite a slowdown in other
parts of the country, Fort Worth has continued steady economic growth. According to The Perryman Group’s study,
“Activity in the Barnett Shale and, hence, the economic benefits for the area
are growing faster than expected. In fact, based on year-end 2007 levels, the
area was experiencing gains of $8.2 billion in annual output (8.1% of total
output) and 83,823 jobs (8.9% of total jobs), up from $5.2 billion in
annual output and 55,385 permanent jobs last year. The performance represents
a net gain of more than 50% in a single year.”
The full report can be found @ http://www.barnettshaleexpo.com/docs/2008_Report.pdf. Companies active in all aspects of the gas play including oilfield
equipment manufacturers, drilling service companies, energy production and
distribution companies, oilfield transportation companies, new technology
